Lee Nyers is not a stranger to the Natural Bridge State Park. He's been going there since he was 7 years old. "My father used to take us here every summer and every November.", says Nyers, now a father of two himself. "He used to take us Turkey hunting in the fall and now I take my kids here. We don't hunt but we still camp and we still fish. It's a big forest. I still haven't explored all of it. And by the time I do, I'll have forgotten most of it.
Lee may have seen a majority of what hides in the park, but he admits that's not so and that there's more to the park he could ever explore. But there was little way he would have expected what he came across on a late September evening. "We were camped not far outside of Big Woods. I had just went to bed. The weather was cool and I had a fire going which my kids were out tending. My children came into (the tent) and were very scared. They said they heard something around the campsite and just that they were very scared and that they didn't know why. This was unusual for them. They had their separate tent right next to mine and they slept outside by themselves all the time. I figured they must have heard an animal out in the woods somewhere.
Lee told his children he would go out to check the area though they pleaded him not to. He put some more wood on the fire and walked out into the woods. Not exactly knowing why he decided to take a walk he wander perhaps a hundred feet or so. He noticed the forest was unusually quiet. He decided to relieve himself and while this was happening his eyes adjusted.
"What I began to notice was a shape not too far from me. Maybe ten feet or so. By the time I had closed half the distance I realized what I was walking up to. I stopped dead in my tracks. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I felt that I might swallow it. It was the classic little gray man. It's eyes were huge, insect like and glossy black. I couldn't break free. I was frozen and it was just standing there but it wasn't looking at me. It had been standing there the whole time I could tell but it was dead still and it was then I realized it had been some kind of weird statue. The thing was completely naked and the skin was like gray mud. I remember what I think was genitalia. It stood maybe up to my chest. I walked up to touch it and it just took off. You never heard me scream so loud in my life. It ran away. I realized it was real and I ran in the other direction. Then I realized I had to go back and get my kids. I circled around towards the fire, got my kids in the truck and we left the tents behind us.
When Lee returned the next day after an uneasy sleep at a hotel, his tents and equipment were still there. Though he still plans to visit the woods he claims it might be a little while.
